NCEC emergency response during America’s Cup
The UK’s National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC) will provide the chemical emergency response during the 35th America’s Cup yacht race, held over the 26 May – 19 June 2017 in Bermuda.
NCEC will be providing the chemical emergency response as a chosen partner of the event’s primary security provider. NCEC will be on call 24 hours a day to provide telephone support in the event of an incident involving chemicals or hazardous materials.
The 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda will be contested by defenders ORACLE TEAM USA, and a challenger who is still to be selected.
Potential challengers include the Land Rover BAR team, led by Martin Whitmarsh, former team principal of Mclaren F1, and Sir Ben Ainslie, the UK’s most decorated competitive sailor. The UK based team aims to ‘bring the cup home’ – despite having founded the event in 1851, the UK has never taken the America’s Cup.
“It is a privilege to provide chemical emergency response for the America’s Cup,” said Jon Gibbard, NCEC director. “We are a global company so there might be a little friendly rivalry between Ricardo’s US and UK teams in the build up to the race. But our overriding priority is to ensure that, in the case of an incident involving hazardous materials, all teams, spectators and attendees have immediate access to the expert advice and guidance they need to stay safe.”
