Train the brain: clean gear can save a life

Education and training prepares firefighters to assess a dangerous scene and make a split-second decision that could possibly save lives, including their own. How can fire departments ensure their members receive and retain important training information? One suggestion is through cognitive learning, which is the function based on how a person processes and reasons information, including problem-solving, memory retention and the perception of learned material.

One specific training topic that is crucial is properly training firefighters to clean their gear. The statistics are hard to ignore – 68% of firefighters develop cancer. Implementing Safety and Health Officers to assure a safe workplace – station and scene – and call out potential exposures to help prevent firefighter cancer, can help protect firefighters.
