Angus Fire has been designing and manufacturing fire protection products and foam concentrates aimed at storage tank operators for over forty years, and remains at the forefront of the design of cutting-edge fire equipment that meets the most stringent standards and is approved by key industry approval bodies and used by bulk liquid storage companies operating tank farms.
In general, fuel storage tanks are categorised by construction type and each requires a different approach to its fire protection requirements.
Fixed Roof Tanks
Fixed roof storage tanks are protected using Foam Top Pouring Systems designed to apply foam gently through the tank wall onto the burning surface of the fuel. Gentle application is preferred to maximise the efficiency of the finished foam. The Angus Fire Top Pourer features a unique butterfly nozzle that is designed to throw the foam back onto the tank wall ensuring gentle application.
Open Top Floating Roof Tanks
Floating roof tanks are widely used to store large quantities of petroleum products such as crude oil and condensate. They are designed as opened top cylindrical steel shells fitted with internal floating roofs that rise and fall as the liquid level in the tank changes. 90% of fires in open floating roof tanks start in the seal between the floating roof and the tank wall, known as the rim seal.
The most effective method to control a fire in the rim seal area is by applying foam from pourers fixed to the tank wall. The Angus Fire Rimseal Pourer has a low profile to minimize the effect of wind, and to deliver a well formed foam into the rim seal area irrespective of whether the roof is at its highest or lowest level.
More recently Angus Fire has developed the Angus Fire Full Surface Pourer to apply foam at the correct application rate in case a full surface fire occurs.
For open top floating roof tanks with diameters over 110m, Angus Fire offers its Full Surface Nozzle which will throw foam into the dead spot in the centre of the tank which may not be reache by the Full Surface Pourers.
Geodesic Dome Tanks
The fire protection of geodesic dome tanks is challenging, as the height restriction often prevents the use of Rim Seal Pourers or Top Pourers. Despite having a fixed roof, the risk area for firefighting remains the seal between the floating roof and the tank wall. Therefore a slim ‘Through the Roof’ profile pourer is required. Once again, Angus Fire has designed the Geodesic Pourer which is supported by its pipework and is efficient in fighting rim seal fires within geodesic tanks.
It is not all about the equipment – Foam Concentrates
Firefighting foam is also an essential component in all tank protection systems. Angus Fire manufactures a range of foam concentrates to suit differing tanks and contents. These range from general purpose foams for hydrocarbon based risks – such as Angus FP70 Fluoroprotein foam (FP) with its excellent heat resistant properties and slow drainage – to specialised foams for polar solvent or other water miscible risks, such as Angus Tridol Ultra 1-3 Alcohol Resistant Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AR-AFFF).
