A 12-month-old infant, five children have died alongside two women in a fire that spread rapidly through a villa in the Baniyas area of Abu Dhabi on Tuesday 2nd October. Four other family members remain in a critical condition in hospital.
The fire is believed to have started around 0500 hours on the ground floor of the two-storey building and it is reported that those trapped were desperately calling for help as the fire developed.
Despite their best efforts, the fire was well established by the time Firefighters arrived on scene.
Following the tragedy, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Dubai’s ruler and the UAE’s prime minister and vice president, has said the country would install fire alarms in all citizens’ homes.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
