The Fire Service College (FSC) Firefighter Foundation Programme (FFDP) is now available to Fire Services (FRS’s) in England through the Operational Firefighter Level 3 Apprenticeship. This programme is delivered through the FSC and Knowledgepool, both part of the Capita People Solutions business. The two-year programme is directly linked to the Operational Firefighter Apprentice Standard technical knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Led by experienced and highly qualified instructors, learners will undergo a best-practice residential Firefighter Foundation Programme course at the FSC, making use of the world-class training facilities including the largest range of carbonaceous training venues in Europe. Knowledge pool have been partnering with some of the UK’s largest employers for over eleven years to deliver effective apprenticeship schemes, including public sector bodies such as the Ministry of Defence, Home Office, Ministry of Justice and the Department of Work and Pensions.
The programme consists of four elements designed to ensure that apprentices gain a full understanding of the knowledge and skills components of the Standard. These are delivery of professional qualifications, on-programme support, personal development and an End-Point assessment.
Ted O’Brien, Head of Learning & Development, Fire Service College said: “Apprenticeships are a great way to attract, retain and develop talent across an organisation. The skills and experience of the FSC combined with the experience and capability of one of the UK’s largest apprentice programme provides makes a great solution. The programme offers all FRS’s in England a cost-effective managed service allowing access to the apprentice levy to fund the training and development of firefighters.”
The support provided to FRS’s means that the scheme will be delivered with little or no additional burden to fire service management and training staff. The curriculum has been specifically designed to meet the demanding requirements of the apprenticeship standards but is flexible enough to allow adaptation to meet specific needs. Learning will be supported and evidenced by Capita’s state-of-the-art learning management system, Tessello™, specifically designed to support the delivery of apprenticeship programmes.
