Initiative 2: International Stair Descend Day – 19 May 2023
Launched at the 7th International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference in May 2022, the International Stair Descend Day (ISDD) is an initiative to encourage all residents, occupants and tenants to descend the stairs in their high-rise building on the same day (19 May 2023). The ISDD is not a fire drill or practice evacuation, its purpose is to get occupants of buildings to descend the stairs in their building. The ISDD will hopefully start a conversation between occupants about their knowledge and ability to use the stairs in the event of an evacuation. At best, it will be a community event with perhaps the ability to raise money for charity. If people descend the stairs together, this could culminate in a community event at ground floor level, e.g. coffee and doughnuts etc.
Several notable buildings around the world have already committed to taking part, and the ISDD should not be limited to residential high-rise buildings. Mixed use and business buildings are also welcomed to take part. Get in touch if you want to take part and share your experiences.
