On August 7, 2018, in Dallas, Texas, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and Pierce Manufacturing announced the selection of San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White as the 2018 Career Fire Chief of the Year.
The IAFC represents the leadership of firefighters and emergency responders worldwide. Their members are the world’s leading experts in firefighting, emergency medical services, terrorism response, hazardous materials spills, natural disasters, search and rescue, and public safety policy.
A number of Chief Hayes-White’s distinguished colleagues at the IAFC submitted nominations for her as the recipient of this year’s award citing the stability of her leadership in making changes in the SFFD, some of which were controversial and difficult to institutionalize. Others referred to her as a hands-on, collaborative and team-oriented leader and commended her commitment to the community and the SFFD
to lead, educate and serve.
The IAFC also received nominations from City of San Francisco and State of California leaders such as US Senator Dianne Feinstein, George Schultz, former US Secretary of State and his wife, Charlotte Shultz, Chief of Protocol for the City of San Francisco and the State of California as well as former Mayor Mark Farrell.
During her tenure, Chief Hayes-White has instituted many vital changes, both in and out of the Department, including the implementation of a random on-duty alcohol and drug testing policy, the reconfiguration of Emergency Medical Services and the restoration of promotional examinations – all of which have increased accountability and led to greater operational efficiency. She leads one of the most diverse groups of uniformed personnel in the fire service worldwide with the percentage of women and minorities rising above fifty percent.
The Mission of the IAFC is to provide leadership to current and future career, volunteer, Fire-Rescue and EMS Chiefs, Chief Fire Officers, Company Officers and Managers of emergency service organizations throughout the International community through vision, information, education, services and representation to enhance their professionalism and capabilities.
