On January 4, 2017, 11 San Francisco Firefighters who are part of SF Bomberos will depart for Nicaragua to join Bend Firefighters Foundation in conducting essential firefighting training in several fire stations in Northern Nicaragua.
During the one-week visit, our local firefighters will be volunteering their time to train Nicaraguan
Firefighters from six different fire stations in the northern state of Estelí and Matagalpa. The San Francisco Firefighters will be conducting vehicle extrication and trauma assessment training, along with swift water rescue techniques. This training is vital in the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes,” where tropical storms, flooding and other disasters occur on a regular basis, oftentimes causing fatalities and devastating injuries. The fire stations in Nicaragua have limited resources and knowledge of various rescue operations; therefore, the expert training from San Francisco and Bend Firefighters will continue to be critical for local Nicaraguan Firefighters in performing their regular duties.
This endeavor fits within the mission of the San Francisco Fire Department to protect and save lives by providing emergency services and suppressing fires through prevention and education.
This trip was made possible through the tremendous financial support of the San Francisco Firefighters IAFF Local 798, the San Francisco Fire Department, United Fire Service Women, ERSLA, as well as donations from Oakland based L&N Curtis and Sons.
The continued improvement of the knowledge and skills of the local firefighters is one main goal of
ERSLA, and with the support of the professional Firefighters from the San Francisco Fire Department, they hope to create systems in the country that will continue to save lives, prevent accidents, and improve emergency response.
