Moors for the Future Partnership, in partnership with Dorset County Council and Natural England, have developed a tool that can be used by multiple organisations and individuals to input wildfire data into a single database.
Called the Wildfire Log, the Partnership hopes that the tool will provide a simple way for users to record incidents of wildfire and to use the data to inform land-management practices, public engagement and scientific research.
The Log is currently being piloted in the South Pennine Moors Special Area for Conservation and the Peak District National Park (UK), with the Partnership hoping to roll it out further afield in the near future, and is funded by Natural England and the Partnership’s MoorLIFE2020 project.

Moors for the Future Partnership had consulted widely on the format of the Log and worked with the Home Office to ensure automatic inclusion of the Fire and Rescue Services’ Incident Recording System (IRS) database. They hope the result will be a useful and valued tool that provides a place where all wildfires and their associated data can be recorded and accessed by approved users.

MoorLIFE2020
The MoorLIFE2020 project is investing £16 million to protect extensive areas of internationally important blanket bog in the South Pennine Moors Special Area of Conservation. The work is being carried out to reduce the risk of wildfire, increase biodiversity, improve water quality, reduce flood risk, and help to fight climate change by storing carbon.
Alongside the ambitious conservation works, extensive research and monitoring is taking place to evaluate the conservation methods. A pioneering communications and community engagement programme runs alongside the conservation and science work to inspire partners, land managers and members of the public to cherish our vital blanket bogs.
