The Las Vegas Firefighters (Local 1285) and the Henderson Professional Firefighters (Local 1883) launched their safety campaign, “Safe Pools Rule!” with a press conference on April 13 at Cowabunga Bay.
This is the second year that the two locals have teamed up to spread awareness about pool safety in our community, focusing on the A, B, C, and Ds of drowning prevention: Adult supervision, pool Barriers, Classes such as CPR and swim lessons, and Devices like life vests.
Henderson Firefighters President Dan Pentkowski, Las Vegas Firefighters Vice President Todd Ingalsbee and Henderson Fire Chief Matt Morris spoke about the campaign objectives and the mission for zero drownings this summer. Henderson Mayor Pro Tem Debra March and Henderson Councilwoman Gerri Schroder also attended and presented the organizations with a proclamation declaring April “Safe Pools Rule! month.”
“As summer is quickly approaching, it is important to remind our community that drowning incidents are 100 percent preventable,” said Ingalsbee. “Pool safety starts and ends with each of us, we can all make a difference. We are proud to launch this year’s campaign with the Henderson Firefighters and hope that our Safe Pools Rule! message is heard loud and clear throughout the community.”
Pentkowski, who has led the campaign since 2011 says, “Drowning incidents in our community are an absolute tragedy… For families, for the first responders… Everyone. We hope that the community will actively engage with this campaign, learn and use the A, B, C and Ds of drowning prevention and make this a safe summer. Zero drownings is the only solution.”
In addition to the launch, firefighters have organized mass “Walk-and-Knock” events in Henderson and Las Vegas to engage with residents and educate the community about pool safety. They will visit various neighborhoods throughout the month of April to hand out door hangers and speak to homeowners about A, B, C and Ds of pool safety.
